About the Programme & Service Users :
Reading Odyssey, a community-based project by SHINE Children & Youth Services, aims to empower disadvantaged children to enjoy reading with meaning, knowledge, and understanding. The program serves primary school children who are vulnerable by their social circumstances or unmet need. This is a 12 + 2 sessions volunteer-supported reading programme based on a leveled reading system. Reading Grade (R.G.) of children will be assessed and graded readers will be recommended based on their R.G. You will be working with children from lower-income families aged 6-12 years old living in rental flat housing in Jalan Bukit Merah.

Key Responsibilities :
As a Reading Mentor, you will: 📌 Undergo training pre-program to learn relevant skills and prog specific knowledge 📌 Read with children (in pairs or small groups) 📌 Listen to children reading aloud 📌 Have discussions with the children to build their confidence and skills (reading and comprehension) 📌 Take part in session briefings / debriefings as part of volunteer skills development and support

Requirements

Role Requirements:
📌 Minimum Age: 17 📌 Educational attainment: At least O levels or its equivalent. 📌 Patient with children especially when they are unmotivated. 📌 Open to learning ways of guiding children. 📌 Able to commit for the duration of the reading programme. 📌 Able to attend pre-volunteering training prior the start of RO 📌 This opportunity is in partnership with Youth Corps Development Team @ SHINE. By signing up for this opportunity, you will be registered as a SHINE and Youth Corps Singapore volunteer. Your registered email with SHINE will be used to create a volunteer.gov.sg account.
