About the Programme & Service Users :
Volunteers will be part of the Reading Odyssey (RO) programme: a weekly reading programme for children with low reading abilities. RO uses a guided reading approach to develop a child’s reading. It aims to develop their information processing skills, improve their well-being and social mobility through meaningful inclusion in society. Some of the service users will be made up of children who are part of SHINE’s STAR Programme: a long-term mentoring programme aimed at children from low-income communities in the vicinity.

Key Responsibilities :
1. Reading to the children, both on one-to-one and in small group basis. 2. Facilitating the children during activities. 3. Engaging the children in a discussion based on the book that they are reading. 4. Attending briefing and debriefing sessions before and after the reading sessions. 5. Assist in making the space ready for the activities. 6. Putting the space back into good order after the activities have been completed.
Support Given :
Volunteers will be provided with adequate training to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to engage the children and support them in their reading journey with Reading Odyssey.

Requirements

Role Requirements:
1. Be at least 17 years old. 2. Patient with children and has an interest in guiding them in their behavior and reading. 3. Fluent in spoken English. 4. Educational level of GCE 'O' Levels and above. 5. Able to attend compulsory pre-event volunteer orientation/training prior to the start of the programme.
